Southern Cross Catholic Vocational College

SCCVC Construction & Automotive Workshops
Southern Cross Catholic Vocational College (SCCVC) is a purpose build vocational senior high school in Burwood, Sydney. Typically students are aged 16-19, and study at least 3 vocational subjects. This photo shows the new Construction and Automotive workshops. My name is Catherine Ryan and I work closely with Mr Guest, one of the Construction Teachers at the College.

    Hi Catherine!

    Nice to read your blog.
    I was born in Sydney, my dad worked for Volvo in Sydney. So I have dual citizenship, but I am Swedish.

    Are there many vacant teaching jobs in Sydney?

    Have many teachers teaching credentials?

    Hi Thomas, how lucky are you to have dual citizenship. In Australia a vocational trainer needs to have industry experience and national qualifications in the field they are teaching. At school level, most vocational areas taught are only at Certificate II / III level. Trainers need to have the same vocational qualification, as well as a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment. All vocational teachers at SCCVC have these credentials. Vocational teachers do not need to be university trained.

      Yes, I´m lucky to have dual citizenship!
      In Sweden more and more vocational teachers need to be university trained. Thanks for intresting answers!

    Hi Catherine!
    I am one of the University teachers. It is very interssting to read your blog. You must be proud of your school,,it looks new and nice.
    I had the chance to visit Australia some two years ago, Melbourne and WaggaWagga, where we met with Rossie at the vocational teacher education to - among other things - prepare for the bolg exchange.
    Only had four hours in Sidney between planes so we ruched down to the center to see the "must", the opera house and eat by the see. That was really exiting.

    Your school looks great.How many teachers and students are working there? Do they take the courses on a full time bases or can they choos?e the speed of their studies
